Additionally, increased knowledge and the advances of modern dentistry have led the old population to retain more natural teeth, needing specialized dental services for a longer time. Changes in biochemical and physiological processes occur with aging in all body tissues, including the periodontium. The association between periodontal and systemic diseases has also been widely discussed, suggesting the need of a multidisciplinary care, especially in older adults, who are frequently affected by chronic systemic conditions and multiple drug therapy. These features lead to a highly complex management of the geriatric population, challenging the dental care providers. The aim of this study is to review the age-related changes and the consequences of other factors, such as systemic diseases and drugs, on the periodontium of aged patients.

Evaluation of salivary immunoglobulin A level in thalassemic patients with periodontitis in comparison with thalassemic patients with healthy periodontium

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study was conducted to evaluate salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) level in thalassemic patients with periodontitis in comparison to thalassemic patients with healthy periodontium.METHODS: Seventy-five patients were included in this study and were divided into three groups, group A: 25 major thalassemic patients with mild to moderate periodontitis, group B: 25 thalassemic ...

The Anatomy and Physiology of the Healthy Periodontium

The anatomy and physiology of the healthy periodontium will be described in its relationship to the natural dentition, jaws, and the oral environment. The periodontium serves as the supporting apparatus for the teeth in function and in occlusal relationships. It consists of the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The embryonic origin, composition, and hi...

Influence of stress simulation parameters on the fracture strength of all-ceramic fixed-partial dentures.

OBJECTIVES This in vitro study tested the influence of diverse stress simulation parameters on the fracture strength of all-ceramic three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs). METHODS All-ceramic FPDs made of Empress 2 (Ivoclar-Vivadent, FL) were exposed to thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML) with varying loading parameters such as chewing force (amount, frequency), thermal loading, l...

Regeneration of periodontal tissues: cementogenesis revisited.

Virtually all types of periodontal disease are caused by periodontal pocket infections, although several other factors, including trauma, aging, systemic diseases, genetics, etc., can contribute to the destruction of the periodontium (1, 18, 31, 52, 60, 107, 128, 127, 194). Repair of the periodontium and the regeneration of periodontal tissues remains a major goal in the treatment of periodonta...

mTOR Inhibition Rejuvenates the Aging Gingival Fibroblasts through Alleviating Oxidative Stress

The aging periodontium may be vulnerable to periodontal pathogens and poor response to inflammation and susceptible to tumorigenesis. Human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) through continuously replicative culture served as an in vitro surrogate for aging. To investigate the effects of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition on the aging gingiva, we stimulated the high-passage hGFs wit...
